Delaware Hospice offers a free, four-day summer camp at Lums Pond State Park for children and teens coping with the loss of a loved one. I was invited to offer Zumba to the campers today by Earline Vann, the camp director.
About a year ago, I met Ms. Vann at an annual charity art auction my children participate in. Camp New Hope is based on the belief that children can be supported in the process of grief if they are provided with opportunities to express their feelings. Often, when there is death in the family, the children have no way to communicate how they feel. This program gives them that opportunity.
When I arrived at Lums Pond, the campers had finished lunch. It was such a beautiful day with an occasional breeze coming off the pond. My first group came from the wooded area to the pavilion eagerly. They were a group kids ranging in ages from six to nine. In spite of the heat, they moved the entire class only breaking for water when I insisted.
The second group of campers were teens. Aaaahhhh teens, gotta love ‘em! I’ve done special events at high schools and LOVE when teens try Zumba for the first time. They stand with folded arms for a split second looking at me, as if to say, “No matter what you do, I’m not going to move.” But after the first shake, it’s over. They get so into it that they forget they are a part of a group. They giggle, shake and wiggle.
Many of the children in Camp New Hope have lost a parent, a grandparent, or another close relative to illness or sudden death. The week is designed with activities and projects to show them that they are not alone in their grief. Today was the next step in their healing journey. Taking time to share in the joy of life through movement and dance.
